More accurately, it's called "košíček" (a tiny, little basket). But you can't sing "Košíček Košíček Košíček", it has too much syllables to fit in the rhytm. So they shortened it to "košík" and created abomination. One thing that confuses me is that we actually have two words for cupcakes, the second one is "Dortík" (little cake), which fits well. Why they didn't use that is a mystery.

Also, most of voices in Czech are like affected mother's voice when she's talking to her toddler. Which really fits the "inteligent unicorn mare" image. Mayor Mare keeps forgetting the name of her town, sometimes refferencing it as "ponyville" and sometimes as "poníkov", The "osobní značka" - "personal mark" of CMC sounds terrible…

It's hard for us to look as serious fans of high quality animated show, when the TV airs it with such terrible translation and dub.

Well, the German dub sticked to the old translation "Schönheitsfleck", literally translated "beauty mark" or "beauty stain", more precise that kind of artificial beauty patch that womans were wearing in their face long time ago, like Marylin Monroe. Compared to that, personal mark doesn't sound too bad.

The problem is, that "značka" is mostly used for traffic sign or brand. (yeah, we have lots of words like this)
But it's hard to judge our translators about this, since it's really hard to find good words which doesn't sound stupid. Maybe leaving original, english term would be best. They did it in lots of cases anyway.

The voice actors in Slovenia aren't too bad(could be 20% better tho). The main problem is the use of formal language, bad translation and sometimes horrible lip synch. My favorite voices are Raritys and Twilights, to me they seem pretty close to the originals.

Now the guys here did something unique(and a bit annoying) with renaming the characters.

They do have the tendency to make pretty decent or horrible songs. Now I don't watch our dub too often, but I did have to record Winter Wrap Up for my brother. This one's one of the decent songs.

Ah renaming the characters, Hasbro Germany did it until late 3.5.

e.g. Scootaloo's G3 name was Schmetterlingsblitz (Butterfly Bolt)

Really? I found Applejack and Pinkie Pie (same VA) to be ok, bordering on quite good. But then again, Danish is not my first language.

The weirdest thing about the Dutch dub is that half the characters speak Dutch with a Dutch accent and the others with a Belgium accent.

That's not weird, that's "normal". SDI Media Belgium is in charge of the French and the Dutch dub.

So I learned something today: The Netherlands also have their distinctive regional accents.

Since I cannot really say there's accents that clearly heard in the german version, it is interesting to read there's this setup with the dutch dub.

Finland doesn't really have a large (or strong) dubbing culture since everything except shows for really small children are subbed instead of being dubbed. This shows 90% of the time; Sharkmachine's earlier link is a great example...
Not a lot of money, time or talent is put into these; unless they're Disney...

FiM, however, is actually tolerable at times, even though the translation is always either too literal or way too unimaginative. The personalities of the ponies don't translate that well through the acting and characters seem a little toned down. Worst of all, most lines feel really blunt and artificial: You just can't connect with the ponies as you can in the original. They also went and translated the place names excluding Ponyville, at least in the first version (Ticket Master DVD). Fortunately the characters weren't renamed for the translation, but Princess Luna has been changed to "Princess Selena" or something in at least one toy advertisement booklet... WTF!
The worst parts are the songs because you really can't tell who is singing (off key) from the voices... They all sound the same! Even for a native speaker... Besides, they're all sung in a horrible nasal voice...
And I thought you couldn't buck up the rhyme at the end of Pinkie's Gala Fantasy Song, then I heard it in Finnish -_-

All in all it's not as bad as some other cartoon dubs (Digimon is still the worst) but definitely not worthy of the greatest cartoon of our era... Too cheap, toned down and artificial!

Go and watch it in Finnish... Make my day!

Lauren Faust had planned to name Luna "Selena" at first, actually.
It originates from old greek and does mean "moon".
It was not accepted. I assume because of Selena Gomez. And since she's a Disney slave puppet "employee" I can understand when Hasbro wants to get away from them.

I knew not every country would fully dub any show/movie, but there's more neglect than I thought.

Well, I think it's average. Not great, can be bad (very bad) at certain moments.
The thing I don't appreciate about it is that all the voice are acted to be very girly. Whereas in the original version, voices were unique but not obnoxiously-over-the-top girly =)

Then let me ask, in comparision with other shows and your own perception - is the general "tone" of female characters "girly" throughout french productions (including dubs)? If so, it's a cultural issue.
Us, watching the original, we have shifted our cultrual perception already. Insofar that is much more easily noticed and thus weights heavy.

Dutch dubs. I only watched one episode where the CMC are collecting CM stories. I lasted 5 minutes.

I find some of them ok (Spike's VA is the same as the one for Ash in Pokémon, was a little nostalgic for me)
some of them have a really annoying pitch (I shut down the TV after Rarity shouted at Sweety Belle for taking the fabric)

I think it depends on the animations. Ten years ago I would've said yes, the voices for female characters are very girly. Nowadays I'm not sure, I don't really know about little kid's shows.
